Who is my neighbor?

Sunday's Gospel calls us to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul and to love our neighbor as ourself-- our youth group poked at these words for a while and eventually we discussed the question, "who is my neighbor?".

The group felt real comfortable with our neighbor being a sick boy, an elderly neighbor, a child overseas (like the one the group sponsors)... but the drunk on the corner and the drug addict in prison got a less than favorable review!

The song I learned when I was nine years old sums it up... who is my neighbor? Anyone in need, anyone in need.

My experience has shown me that studying a persons need is detrimental to my being charitable with the gifts God has given me... better to help your neighbor, the one that crosses your path on any given day...if you are moved to go out of your way for them... just do it, if you think about it too much or analyze too much... you'll miss out on the chance to love your neighbor as yourself. Just do it!
